The story revolves around a wrangler / drifter who aginst his will affects the lives of those he comes in contact with; an old woman who feels her life is over, a middle-aged woman abandoned by her husband, and a young 14 year old girl who lives with a drunk mom and her mom's abusive boyfriend.
The main character was abused as a child and his manner of dealing with the world is through horses and humor, telling stories to deflect the rest of the world. He recongnizes inb the girl the signs of his own abuse, and takes a chance in befriending her. In doing so he and the two women who barley know each other or the child, create within their small world a nuclear family based on love.
